A big Happy Birthday to your Dad from another Dad, Grandpa, Poppa. who is just ahead of him with # 87 next week, June 24. If he were here or I were there, we could share some good stories of our growing up, he in Wisconsin, me in Ohio around the same time and conditions. Thanks for sharing stories of a special guy.
Wow, Happy early Birthday to you Gary, in case I am busy with Munchkin and forget to message you then! Yes, I’m sure you have lots of similarities in Midwest upbringing with Dad! I will pass on your wishes to him. Thank you so much!
One of the things that became important to me as I, myself, wrote about my dad in essays on Substack was how they had the potential to become historical artifacts of and for family. This entry, I’ll bet, is going to serve the same purpose in your family—it should, it is so well-written and captures so well the wonderful essence that is your father. (I myself have forgiven him the whole Packers thing—we Seahawks don’t play well with Packers).
Oh yes, we know all about you Seahawks! I will pass along your forgiveness and expect Dad will forgive you back. Most likely he will feel sorry for you because you are not a part owner! 😂😂 And yes, I hope my writings about Mom and Dad become part of his collection for future generations! Thank you so much, Kert!
I do think the Green Bay model of ownership is outstanding—perhaps the best way to promote a rabid fan base. But be that as it may, we didn’t so much want to beat the Packers but destroy Rodgers. Now that he’s gone, nothing much to hate about the green and gold—except I have it on good authority the cheese head cheeses aren’t Vegan. So I’ll start holding that against them now.
Thank you, Becca! I will pass along your wishes! I’m happy to be writing about them while they can still correct me and add more to the stories, but yes, so many special memories to sustain me someday!
Happy Birthday to your dad. Such lovely memories you have. He’s so lucky to have Munckin to read to and tell the third generation all his stories. Always a delight.
What a wonderful piece about your wonderful dad. Such excellent memories! I love Wisconsin... my dear friend lives there. Your childhood sounds pretty terrific, Cherie! Happy Birthday to your Dad!!
It really was a different time. I loved the photos you shared, too! My "Birthday sister" lives in Belleville, just south of Madison. She retired from the VA after 35 years of nursing! She's my hero!
Happy birthday to your dad! I enjoyed reading your stories about him. I hope he's had a chance to read this! The photos are wonderful too. My favorite is the naptime one of the two of you. Enjoy the special days you get with him - and the ordinary ones as well. Miss my dad more than I can express.
Every family had a Butch or a Buddy. Even though ours was an smack-dab in the middle of NYC, the European influence was pronounced, in food, style and tradition. The Americanization of immigrants was everywhere, with our Jewish heritage taking a backseat.
Years later there is a resurgence of tradition and culture. One daughter became ultra religious and my son is visiting his girlfriend’s family in Poland. What a turnaround!
